Mondulkiri, the wildest and most remote province in Cambodia, has to be one of the best places to travel, especially if you are looking for an adventure! If you are planning to visit Cambodia soon and want to do some adventure activities, you should definitely include Mondulkiri in your itinerary! Here are the top five reasons why you should visit Mondulkiri province if you want to do adventurous things in Cambodia
What to do in Mondulkiri?
The unspoiled forests of Mondulkiri are perfect for trekking, birdwatching, rock climbing, caving, tubing and rafting. At night, local guides take visitors on night treks to visit 'ghost villages', for a unique insight into village life. And during your visit you will learn all about our endangered primate species like Silvered Leaf Monkey, Proboscis monkey and Hoolock gibbon. Mondulkiri is truly a nature-lover's paradise. A new national park has been set up in Srepok District which has got everything that nature lover expects with beautiful natural resources that many people don't know much about.
Where to stay in Mondulkiri?
You can find many different hotels and resorts, with different price ranges, across Mondulkiri. If you’re looking for a quick overnight stay on your way to other parts of Cambodia, check out Lakeview Hotel or Oriental View Hotel. These hotels offer reasonably priced, clean rooms within walking distance of all attractions. For those who plan to stay longer in Mondulkiri, there are plenty of options ranging from bungalows to luxury resorts.
How to get there from Phnom Penh?
To get to Phnom Sampeau (the capital of Mondulkiri Province) you have to take a bus or pick-up truck. It takes around 4 hours by bus and 6 hours by pick-up truck to travel from Phnom Penh. To travel there independently you can also rent a motorbike, but make sure that you’re very good at driving it as roads are not often smooth so it can be difficult for inexperienced people. If you don’t want to drive yourself then find one of your friends who has a motorbike or try Couchsurfing, if someone is staying there already, then they will most likely be able to arrange something for you too.
Tips for your trip there
As a destination, Mondulkiri offers much to see and do. We invite you to come here as we journey through our forest, meet with tribal chiefs, visit mountain cave pagodas, and discover traditional villages. You’ll be off-the-beaten path for an adventure you won’t soon forget. However, it is also important to be aware of a few precautions before arriving. First of all, travel anywhere outside major cities should only occur during daylight hours; roads are narrow and winding with many blind corners so it is important to see what's coming around corners or over hills before driving into them yourself. Also be sure not to travel alone—and never without telling someone where you're going or when you'll return.
Travel insurance as a foreigner when visiting Mondulkiri
As a foreigner, travel insurance can be tricky to navigate; you’ll need an evacuation plan that covers a range of emergencies, including potential health issues or getting stuck while exploring. Luckily, Mondulkiri is one of these special places where foreigners are warmly welcomed – so you should expect that proper medical attention will be available if something were to go wrong. That said, it’s always a good idea to have plans on how you’d get out of there if it wasn’t an option. Again, using travel insurance as a backup plan will help alleviate any stress about what could happen during your time here.
